The Tales of King Arthur

Hudson's continuing series interprets in picture book form the stories that have been called the founding mythology of Western Civilization.

King Arthur and the
Round Table

The crown has barely touched his head when Arthur, now the sixteen-year-old High King of all Britain, is faced with rebellion and civil war. Reluctant to fight his own people, but determined to lead them, he must unite the rival lesser kingdoms he has been called upon to rule. But how can he expect the knights of his court to see themselves as part of one great nation when they can't even settle on who sits closest to the king at his table? Guided by the wise and magical Merlin, Arthur  proves his greatness was no accident of birth but his destiny.

Cameliard had been under siege for many days by the time Arthur and his knights arrived. Not having had time to raise a large force, Arthur could only hope to affect the outcome by confronting Ryence himself.

Arthur and his men charged madly through the enemy camp, cutting a path towards King Ryence. Surprised by Arthur's burst of fury, the old warrior scrambled to retreat, but Arthur pursued him across the littered field. The enemy soldiers quickly scattered when they saw their leader fleeing.

From the castle towers, Leodegrance's knights saw Arthur's bold performance and were inspired to join him. Together they chased the retreating enemy troops deep into the hills of North Wales.
